Nitin Gadkari promised India’s road infrastructure would be like America’s before end-2024

A July 2026 Amit Chavda reel revives Nitin Gadkari’s documented promise that India’s road infrastructure would be like America’s before end-2024. Official records also confirm NHAI’s use of spatial technology, but the America comparison lacked a defined metric.

What the reel shows

A reel posted by Gujarat Congress leader Amit Chavda on 3 July 2026 republishes an older speech by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari. In the clip, Gadkari says space technology is being used for road-related photography and monitoring and promises that, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India’s road infrastructure would be comparable to America’s before the end of 2024.

What is independently supported

The promise itself is authentic. In March 2022, while replying to the Lok Sabha discussion on the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ demands for grants, Gadkari said India’s road infrastructure would be like America’s before December 2024. Doordarshan carried the parliamentary speech. In December 2022, DD News also reported Gadkari telling the Rajya Sabha that India would have road infrastructure like America by 2024.

The space-technology part also has a documented policy basis. A January 2016 Press Information Bureau release says NHAI signed an MoU with ISRO’s National Remote Sensing Centre and NECTAR to use spatial technology for monitoring and managing National Highways, including project preparation, construction-progress monitoring, operation and maintenance.

Important context

Gadkari made similar versions of the America comparison more than once. In February 2023, for example, he specifically promised that Uttar Pradesh would have America-like road infrastructure before the end of 2024. The viral reel’s wording should therefore be archived as a public promise, not as proof that the target was achieved.

After the deadline was approaching, Gadkari was still speaking prospectively. In October 2024 he said India’s road infrastructure would become better than America’s “in the coming time”. That later statement does not by itself prove whether the earlier nationwide target had been met.

Assessment

The reel accurately reflects a documented Gadkari promise and a real government use of spatial/space technology for highway monitoring. However, “road infrastructure like America” is not a clearly defined measurable benchmark in these statements. Without a specified metric—such as road quality, access-controlled highway length, safety, maintenance, travel speed or network coverage—the broad promise cannot responsibly be marked simply fulfilled or failed from this clip alone.

The archival significance is the contrast between a time-bound political infrastructure promise and later public debate about road quality. Individual potholes, accidents or poor roads may be relevant evidence about particular locations, but they do not by themselves establish the nationwide comparison.
