Champawat case: Instagram reel repeats initial gang-rape allegation; police later alleged a conspiracy
A May 7 Instagram reel presented a Champawat gang-rape allegation involving BJP leader Puran Singh Rawat as fact. Subsequent police findings disputed the allegation and described a separate alleged conspiracy; political opponents contested that conclusion.
A May 7, 2026 Instagram reel published by Spot On presented as established fact an allegation that BJP leader Puran Singh Rawat and two others had gang-raped a 16-year-old girl in Champawat, Uttarakhand. The reel said the allegation followed a wedding on May 5 and that police were searching for the named accused.
That was the position reported at the time. The case changed materially within days.
According to reports citing Champawat police, a Special Investigation Team later said the evidence collected did not substantiate the allegation against Puran Singh Rawat, Vinod Rawat and Naveen Singh Rawat. Police said the three named men were not at or near the alleged scene, and that the medical and forensic findings did not support the sexual-assault allegation. Police further said the girl later told investigators and a local court that the incident had not occurred and alleged that she had been used in a conspiracy linked to an earlier rivalry.
Police subsequently arrested Kamal Rawat and Arjita Rai and booked Anand Singh Mehra in a separate case alleging a conspiracy to implicate the three men. These later police findings were reported by PTI and other outlets on May 8–13.
The police account was not universally accepted as the end of the matter: political opponents and local protesters disputed the police conclusion and alleged that the accused were being protected. Those are allegations about the investigation and should not be treated as established findings.
What the reel establishes: it records the initial allegation and the public information available on May 7.
What it does not establish: that the rape allegation was proved. Subsequent police findings directly challenged the version presented in the reel.
