Why Modi’s 2024 remarks are relevant

In the full IANS interview, Modi defended his government’s anti-corruption record, said large accused figures were now being pursued rather than only smaller offenders, and described investigative agencies as independent. He also said elected leaders had no role in deciding whether an accused person should remain in jail or whether a case was valid.

Those remarks do not address the later “washing machine” evidence case by case. But they provide the institutional standard against which the reported pattern is politically and democratically significant: if enforcement is independent and even-handed, similarly situated cases should be explainable by legal and evidentiary differences rather than party alignment.

The earlier IndiaFiles version treated this mainly as a caption-versus-video mismatch. That was too narrow. The mismatch is real, but the stronger archival issue is the tension between a documented pattern of post-switch reprieve and the government’s stated principle of independent enforcement.

The 2024 investigation supplies substantial evidence that many opposition politicians facing central-agency scrutiny later received reprieve after moving to the BJP. That pattern reasonably raises questions about consistency and institutional neutrality.
