An authentic 24 May 2012 clip shows Gujarat CM Narendra Modi calling a steep petrol-price rise a governance failure and seeking a rollback. It resurfaced on 15 May 2026 after petrol and diesel rose ₹3 per litre nationwide under his premiership, creating an archival political role-reversal comparison.
What the reel shows
An Instagram reel posted on 15 May 2026 juxtaposes the latest fuel-price increase with an old statement by Narendra Modi from his time as Gujarat Chief Minister. In the archival clip, Modi criticises the then central government over a petrol-price rise, calls it a visible example of failure in governance, warns of wider price pressure, and asks Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to take the situation seriously and roll back the increase.
The 2012 context
The clip is authentic and dates to 24 May 2012. At the time, state-owned oil marketing companies had raised petrol by ₹6.28 per litre before local taxes; in Delhi the increase was about ₹7.54 per litre. Petrol prices had formally been deregulated in 2010. Contemporary reporting recorded Modi, then Gujarat Chief Minister and an opposition leader, criticising the UPA-era increase and its impact on ordinary people.
Why it resurfaced in 2026
On 15 May 2026, state-run fuel retailers increased petrol and diesel prices by ₹3 per litre across India, the first retail increase in more than four years. The rise came amid sharply higher international crude prices and financial pressure on oil marketing companies during the West Asia energy crisis. In Delhi, petrol rose to ₹97.77 per litre and diesel to ₹90.67 per litre.
The reel uses the 2012 statement to highlight a political role reversal: Modi criticised a fuel-price increase while in opposition-era state politics, while a nationwide fuel increase occurred in 2026 during his tenure as Prime Minister. That comparison is valid as an archival contrast, but it does not by itself establish that the economic circumstances or pricing mechanisms in 2012 and 2026 were identical.
Evidence and caveat
The wording in the reel matches the documented 2012 statement, and an official Narendra Modi YouTube upload from 24 May 2012 is titled as his response to the UPA decision to hike petrol prices by ₹7.50 per litre. The ₹3-per-litre 2026 increase is independently documented by government media and major news organisations. Claims in the Instagram caption about political motives for the timing of price changes should be treated as commentary or inference unless separately established.
