India’s school internet access rose to 63.5%, but government and state gaps remain
A June 2026 reel reused an older “88% without internet” figure to describe current school conditions. UDISE+ 2024-25 shows internet facilities in 63.5% of all schools and 58.6% of government schools: a major decade-long expansion, but one that still leaves large government/private and interstate gaps. The statistic supports a continuing digital-divide concern, not the reel’s broader education-crisis claims by itself.
India’s school internet coverage has improved sharply, but the national average still conceals a substantial digital divide. UDISE+ 2024-25 records internet facilities in 933,987 of 1,471,473 schools—63.5% overall. Among government schools, the corresponding figure is lower: 593,615 of 1,013,322, or 58.6%.
A June 2026 Instagram reel used a much older “nearly 88% lack internet” figure while describing the current condition of India’s government-school system. That statistic does not represent the all-school national position in 2024-25 or 2026. The stronger public-interest question is how far school connectivity has actually improved, and where the remaining gaps are concentrated.
The 88% figure mixes an old government-school gap with a current national claim
The initiating reel was posted on 8 June 2026 by the unverified account @thepublicfreedom (Shubham Singh). Its caption says India’s government-school system faces infrastructure, teacher and learning problems and presents “nearly 88% of schools across India lack internet facilities” as recent official data.
The 88% figure has a historical basis, but not as a current all-school statistic. UDISE+ data for 2019-20 showed internet facilities in only about 22.28% of all schools nationally, meaning roughly 77.7% lacked them. Contemporary reporting on the same UDISE+ release found that fewer than 12% of government schools had internet, making an approximately 88% government-school gap plausible for that period. A 2022 Education 4.0 India report also displayed an “88%” internet-gap figure while citing UDISE+ 2019-20.
Using that older figure in 2026 without its year and management context materially overstates the current national gap.
Connectivity expanded rapidly over the decade
NITI Aayog’s 2026 analysis of UDISE+ data shows all-school internet coverage rising from 8.05% in 2014-15 to 22.28% in 2019-20 and 63.5% in 2024-25. The acceleration after the pandemic-era disruption is substantial: coverage crossed 50% in 2022-23 and continued to rise.
This does not make the digital-access problem disappear. In 2024-25, 41.4% of government schools still did not report an internet facility. Government schools also trailed private unaided schools nationally, where 77.1% reported internet access.
The national average hides very large state differences
UDISE+ 2024-25 shows near-universal or very high all-school connectivity in several jurisdictions, including Delhi, Chandigarh, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. At the other end, internet access was reported by only 18.6% of schools in West Bengal, 26.4% in Meghalaya, 33.6% in Arunachal Pradesh and 36.6% in Manipur.
The government-school divide can be wider still. Nationally, government-school coverage was 58.6%, compared with 77.1% in private unaided schools. For example, UDISE+ records government-school internet availability at 16% in West Bengal, 24.2% in Arunachal Pradesh, 24.9% in Meghalaya and 35.6% in Uttar Pradesh.
These differences matter because one national percentage can conceal very different local conditions for students and teachers.
Internet access is only one part of digital readiness
The reel’s broader concern about weak digital infrastructure is not disproved simply because the 88% figure is stale. NITI Aayog’s 2026 report says only 30.6% of schools had functional smart classrooms in 2024-25, while more than one-third still lacked computers. Connectivity, functioning devices, classroom use, teacher capacity and reliable power are separate constraints.
But the reel also makes wider claims about “crumbling infrastructure,” teacher shortages and “critically low learning outcomes.” Those propositions cannot be established from the internet statistic alone. They require their own measures, time periods and comparisons.
What the evidence shows
The reel is misleading as a current statistic, not because India’s school digital divide has vanished, but because it reuses an older figure without the context needed to interpret it. The evidence shows two realities at once: school internet access expanded dramatically over the past decade, and large government-school and interstate gaps remain.
The durable issue is therefore not whether one viral percentage is “true” or “false.” It is whether digital-infrastructure progress is reaching schools evenly enough for technology-enabled education to be meaningful across different states and school-management systems. The available data establish substantial progress and persistent inequality; they do not by themselves establish the reel’s broader claims about the overall quality of Indian education.
