Viral ‘70 years without BJP’ line turns political dissatisfaction into inaccurate electoral history
A viral reel says earlier generations did not choose the BJP for “70 years” and that 11 years of BJP rule explain why. The dissatisfaction is political opinion, but the literal history is inaccurate: the BJP was formed in 1980 and led Union governments before 2014. The evidence establishes party and election chronology, not why generations voted as they did or who originated the reel’s line.
An Instagram reel posted by @princechaurasia558 says in Hindi: “Congress ne 70 salon mein kya kiya ye to humein nahin pata, lekin hamare baap dada ne 70 salon tak BJP ko kyun nahin chuna ye baat sirf 11 salon mein samajh aa gaya.” The line is political rhetoric: it contrasts dissatisfaction with roughly eleven years of BJP-led Union government with an asserted seventy-year history in which earlier generations supposedly did not choose the BJP.
What the historical record supports
Taken literally, the “70 years” premise is inaccurate. The Bharatiya Janata Party itself was formed on 6 April 1980, according to the BJP’s own historical record. Its predecessor, the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, dates to 1951. It is therefore impossible for Indian voters to have rejected the BJP as the BJP for seventy years before 2014.
The electoral record also does not support a continuous pre-2014 rejection of the BJP. Election Commission of India statistics show that the BJP was the single party with the most Lok Sabha seats in 1996 (161), 1998 (182) and 1999 (182). The Prime Minister’s Office records Atal Bihari Vajpayee, a BJP leader, as prime minister briefly in 1996 and again from March 1998 to May 2004, leading the National Democratic Alliance. The BJP later won 282 Lok Sabha seats in 2014 and 303 in 2019.
What the reel is really arguing
The reel’s broader proposition is not a precise historical claim but a political judgment: that experience of BJP rule since 2014 has given the speaker or sharer reasons to disapprove of the party. That opinion cannot be verified or falsified in the same way as an election result. What can be checked is the historical device used to make the point, and that device compresses a much more complicated electoral history into an inaccurate “70 years without BJP” story.
India’s post-independence politics did include long periods of Congress dominance, especially in the early decades. But that is different from saying voters spent seventy years choosing not to elect the BJP. The party did not exist for much of that period, its predecessor participated from the 1950s, and BJP-led governments held national office well before 2014.
Why the distinction matters
Political one-liners often turn a judgment about present-day governance into a claim about the past. Here, dissatisfaction with BJP rule is a legitimate political opinion, but the historical framing should not be mistaken for a factual account of seven decades of Indian elections. The evidence establishes the chronology of the party and its periods in national power; it does not establish why any particular generation voted as it did, nor does it prove the reel’s implied judgment about the quality of BJP or Congress governance.

That tag alone does not establish that Rahul Gandhi is the person speaking or that he originated the quoted line.
